More costly troubles with the PW GTF engines on Airbus narrow bodies. The abbreviation means Geared Turbo Fan. I have heard operators jokingly say that GTF means “ Going To Fail “ (too soon). Strictly a humorous opinion here.

Learn about the Garrett TFE731 before forming your opinion of geared turbofans. Also note it first ran in 1970. The Honeywell team had a good chuckle at all the headlines suggesting P&W invented something new. It is true that P&W is operating at a much higher power level.

The article is solely about Airbus, and shortage of Pratts GTF engines. Powers ALL A220 series, and many A320 neo series

The Pratt GTF engine reliability issues have bedeviled many Airline operators for years.

Thank you for mentioning the Garrett TFE 731, a model series I'm not familiar with.

From what I’ve read, it seems that the reliability troubles with the Pratt GTF engine mostly aren’t with the gearbox.

Rolls Royce worked through the RB211 problems. It became highly reliable and regarded and is still flying 52 years later.

Hopefully Pratt and Whitney will fix the problems and make it as reliable as it is economical.

Airbus is just looking for somebody to blame for their shortcomings in manufacturing delays again.
