There were 52 re-fuelers and many fighters scrambles all over the U.S. when the "Glitch" happened. It seems like it may have been a hack that they don't want to admit.

Question to professional pilots: On a typical day, how much new information shows up in NOTAMs? If a runway was closed on Wednesday, but not on Tuesday, couldn't that be handled verbally by ATC? Or, is Tuesday's data deleted and the operations process dependent upon new data on Wednesday? I know there is probably a broad range of information that could appear in a NOTAM, but even a two-hour ground stop is extremely disrupting. Was this justified or an overreaction by the FAA in the name of "Abundance of Caution"?

NOTAMs have time periods of validity based on the length of time the reported condition will exist and/or be a factor for the safety of flight at a given airport. They are issued with that operational time period "printed" inside the information string, and so they can be published up to 72 hours prior to going active. Hundreds, if not thousands of NOTAMs are issued daily. The problem here, though, is that apparently every last one of them got deleted, which meant that operators needed to go back in and reissue their NOTAMs, including the ones that were presently active. Even as the system was being recovered, it was completely overwhelmed by operators simultaneously trying to reissue their field's NOTAMs. To answer your question, yes, we were all forced to go "Local" with our NOTAMs, which meant that they simply existed as verbal announcements in the published ATIS information every hour on the hour. In summary, it wasn't an issue of overreaction so much as it was a frantic attempt at data recovery. Either way you slice it, it was an epic failure.

Flew Wednesday from Midway to Richmond. Definitely not a stoppage, perhaps a slight slowdown. I arrived 15 minutes after my scheduled arrival time.

Flight tracker looked good all day long. The sky was full of aircraft.

Read closely: Nathan's question was "Why did the Canadian NOTAM system also go down?" "WHY DID" not "WHY DIDN'T". So, since they are different countries, why did they both have NOTAM system failures the same day?

NAV Canada's response was: “We are still investigating the root cause of the failure,...[a]t this time, we do not believe the cause is related to the FAA outage experienced earlier today."
