I always thought they were an odd plane. So small, and four engines? Hmm...

They used to fly around here like mosquitoes and now I hardly ever see them. It was funny, seeing the spit tail as they came in for landing. Using every surface...

Robert, I could be wrong on this but my understanding was that the Brits wanted a jet that could operate in curfew hours into London's City airport and BAe came up with four small engines, supposedly quiet enough, and brisk performance. They are reasonably quiet landing, but there's hardly a quiet jet on take-off. However, I believe this met the requirement and as well of course, went on to be a very successful design.
