Although the Reno city skyline is still visible in this shot, heavy thick smoke from the Caldor Fire (over 107,000 acres) and Dixie Fire (over 800,000 acreas and four times larger than the combined acreage of the cities of Reno, Carson City, and Sparks) has already completely obscured the Sierra Nevada and, when this shot was taken, was moving east toward the downtown area (and about 90 minutes later created exceptionally hazardous breathing air over the city and the airport). The Dixie Fire has been burning for 7 weeks and is still only 45% contained with full containment expected in about 7 more weeks. It has already completely obliterated several towns in California. The Caldor fire is only 11 miles from entering the city of South Lake Tahoe and 27,000+ residents and guests have already evacuated the city and moved over the CA/NV border to Nevada, leaving South Lake Tahoe a ghost town. Winds of 50 MPH today may possibly push the fire right into the city.
