G-PBYA —
Comments
Tail number is "G-PBYA." Painted in 1943 livery to match the year it was built.
Thanks very much Arnie & Paul! Great looking aircraft. Built the year I was born. Wow.
@ Paul by any chance do you know which type of engines this beauty has, either P&W R-1830 or more powerful Curtis-Wright R-1820. Thank you. A. G. Gonzalez
If you count the various models of the PBY (1.2.3.4.5.5a), the PBY had every version of the P&W R-1830. The PBY-5A used the R-1830-92.
I saw this fly down the Cuckmere valley 2 days ago. Is it based in Southampton?
@ David - I saw it at Duxford and have seen it tracked to/from there since.
My Dad told me that after 17 hours sitting in one of these over the Atlantic his bottom began to ache.
A true classic
a beautiful airplane from any angle.
That really was the period to fly ! And that was a great machine to do it in . A true Classic seaplane.
It has earned its place in history,

The tail number would indicate delivery to the USN in 1944. There were more than 9999 aircraft delivered to the US military in 1944 (and 1943). Thus that number would indicate the 33,915th mil-acft delivery in 1944.
Magnificent aircraft. Double Sunrise flight a regular schedule from Australia to Asis and beyond
