There is always the risk of sounding too critical of dead pilots; ......but if the NOSE is headed drastically DOWN or drastically UP ...... just when does a pilot action the Stab Trim Cutout switches? Those switches are placed there for a reason. Do pilots not train for this scenario any more? Is this still a "memory" item on Boeings? ...or has it changed to a checklist item?

Does The Sun not have anyone there who knows anything about aviation? It makes us wonder just how accurate are any other stories in any other field;... medicine, law enforcement, politics, science, etc. I was sort of expecting this writer to state the reason for the incident was : "no flight plan filed" or something equally distant from reality. These people must be absolutely terrified of flying where they rely upon "miracles" to get them to their destination.

Re: "Air Canada - also known in Canada as Air Monopoly - has higher fares than anyone else... " Not always true! ,Just for fun, I went to Kayak to compare some prices. Check it out for yourself. SunWing certainly has the lowest prices, but WestJet & AC are within a few bucks with WJ 7 or 10 bucks more: http://www.kayak.com/flight-routes/Toronto-Pearson-Intl-YYZ/Vancouver-Intl-YVR However, you are very correct on the disaster the GTAA really is.

That Captain would never have been locked out of the cockpit if his wife had been riding the jump seat.

ok, point taken,.... I am painfully aware of the Qantas incident you mention. The industry is carefully monitoring any similar events and so they should! I guess I am just a little sick & tired of the style of headline :"Distressed passengers told how they survived....." and the überhyping of any incident in the field of aviation. Where is the headline that 144 people will die on the highways of America tomorrow, and another 144 the following day, and another 144 the next day?

DISTRESSED passengers told how they survived a mid-air emergency last night when an Emirates A380's engine exploded at 10,000 feet and forced it to turn back for an emergency landing. Please get a grip! One of the 4 engines quit! A decision was made to jettison fuel and land back at SYD. The aircraft could have been flown all the way to destination on 3 engines. The irony is there were no headlines that most of the other aircraft in the sky that night were operating very safely on 2 engines!

You don't even say "lip balm" at an airport these days. The security people don't seem to know that a REAL bomber will not joke or make any reference to his intent. The TSD are bored to death and just can't wait for a reason to evacuate or do anything to make their jobs appear meaningful. Ok, we need security in the industry, but we need competent security people using effective security measures not the window-dressing and theatre of airport security. This event simply would not have happened in Israel. A bad joke would have been treated as a bad joke.... not an evacuation.

The nose gear did not collapse. It never went down because the gear lever was not selected to the "OFF" position prior to activating the Alt Gear Ext switch. Because they had to delay gear extension until the field was guaranteed, there was not enough time to find the Alt Gr Ext checklist. In those days this was stuck at the back of the "Loss of C Hyd" checklist.

A couple years back I was told that my shaving cream exceeded the 100 ml limit, so it was taken from me and tossed into a large plastic barrel of of creams and lotions and shampoo that had been "liberated" from the many passengers preceding me. When through, I happened to ask how they were planning to dispose of all those products. The security supervisor proudly boasted that they normally donate these items to women's shelters and seniors' homes. Naturally I then asked him if they should be sending liquids presumed to be explosive, toxic, or misrepresented to unsuspecting hospices and shelters. This was acknowledged with silence, and a sweep of the hand toward the gate area...... meaning: shut up, let's move on here, you are free to go. Suspicions confirmed. Small wonder that many of us regard airport screening to be mostly "security theatre" Simply an exercise in optics and nothing beyond.
