Winter Storm Prompts Hundreds of Southwest Airlines Flight Cancellations

प्रस्तुत

As Winter Storm Frida approaches the east coast, Southwest Airlines has taken proactive measures by canceling many flights from Baltimore and the surrounding region. With strained resources and snowy weather anticipated to sweep through their Baltimore hub, Southwest has canceled more than 135 flights from the Maryland gateway as inclement weather and COVID-19 complicate their operations. Well, they could be sitting in their cars on I-95 with no food or restroom available. Shame on Virginia for not putting periodic turn arounds in the freeway medians so you can turn traffic back.

u turn on a freeway into oncoming traffic, pure genius

Yes, that's what the American motorist needs, more ways to do a “u” turn in front of oncoming traffic who, of course are travelling with the utmost safety in mind. If a simple weather check is beyond the average motorists capability just imagine the brains needed to judge the speed of the oncoming traffic in a snowstorm? lol

Here in southern AZ, there are freeway medium crossing U-turns mostly for "authorized" vehicles. Cops, maintenance, etc. I'm sure those unauthorized will get in a "race" with the cops if caught.
In my area, we do not have snowfalls with the same depth or anywhere north.
Freeways here have the medium lower than the regular pavement level.
I see they blocked off several crossovers when an interchange was rebuilt.
VA should have gotten front loaders to get the snow out of their crossovers.

Any time an airport is doing IFR operations only (not even CAT II or III) the number of landing per hour is reduced by ATC. Airline schedules are not based on these reduced rates, so flights wind up getting cancelled.

It’s wiser not to try to challenge snow storms . We rather safely watch the storm on our TV screens, instead of experiencing the storm’s challenges of taking off and landing.

You would think that with all the weather information available at peoples’ fingertips AND that with every major summer or winter storm, delays or cancellations are inevitable, the public would get smarter?

Too busy watching Netflix on their phones to pay attention.

The weather makes a very convenient (and more publicly palatable) excuse for these cancellations that are largely attributable to Covid. No airline wants the public to think their staffing is insufficient to handle their operations - even in the face of a pandemic. The world operates in a whole different manner now thanks to the Chinese virus (let's not forget who caused this quagmire) and airlines are going to have to completely re-think their operations going forward. Passengers are also going to have to get used to a different and less convenient air transport system. Times have changed - adapt.

During the height of the storm, I had less than a quarter mile visibility in GSO and saw plenty of other airlines land and launch

GSO has CAT II approaches for 3 runways and a CAT III for 5L. Not much of a surprise that they were still operational regardless who was coming or going!

IT IS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY..THIS DOES PUT MORE STRAIN ON THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ABLE TO WORK AND NOT "DOWN" WITH COVID HOWEVER...WHO CAN FORGET YEARS BACK WHEN THE AIR FLORIDA PLANE TOOK OFF IN AN ICE AND SNOW STORM, AND CRASHED INTO THE POTOMAC..THINGS HAVE GREATLY IMPROVED SINCE THEN REGARDING DE ICING,HOWEVER,CREW AND PASSENGER SAETY IS A PRIORITY..

No need to shout Mary. Not a good idea to bring up an accident where the crew tried to take off with less than 60% of available thrust because they forgot to turn on engine anti-ice during a”snowstorm”!

I met a gentleman years ago who cliamed to have been a crew member and was very reluctant to talk about it. Rather than thinking why I should or shouldn't believe him I thought ...

What would you do? Sad story.
