It was June 1973 I flew on a PamAm Boeing-747, Flight 2, from Bangkok to Hong Kong by first heading south over the Gulf of Thailand, then east and north, avoiding Vietnam. I did it again after the war by being able to fly direct BKK to HKG, the second time seeing huge craters in the Vietnam countryside from bombs dropped by Boeing-52s. It was a green moonscape.

Remember when the USSR did not allow overflies? That was a huge block of airspace that prevented cheap and non-stop Europe-Asia travel.

Back in the day I was told that an airline that served Israel and any of the Arab states had to maintain separate fleets which were not allowed to land in an Arab country if they ever landed in Israel. Don't know how true it was but wouldn't surprise me a bit. Some of these Arab states can be that petty.

There is plenty of hatred and pettiness on both sides of the Arab/Israeli conflict. No halos on either side.

As the saying goes ... choices have consequences.

Also look at the daily TLV-BKK flight. It takes much longer because Saudi Arabia doesn't allow El Al to fly in their airspace

When are the countries in our world going to stop acting like children? Come on, start acting like adults.

I am afraid you are right. I guess it is back to playground antics for the world.

Wow that's amazing. So much time AND fuel being wasted for such needless reasons! That route could be reduced to ~4300 miles if they could go straight to BKK without that idiotic re-route. With some quick and dirty math that equates to roughly an 8.5 hour flight as opposed to 11 hours, which equates to roughly 9,000 gallons of fuel that could be saved.

Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable.

No, it is their right as a sovereign nation. Period. If someone was to fly over the US with out express permission, I for one would hope they would be shot down some 11.9 miles out.

Yes but the USA would probably only ban planes who pose harm to our airspace or country. In Saudi Arabia's case, Israel poses no harm, it's just because they're Jewish that they are banned from their airspace

And, as a sovereign nation, that is their right. Just like an old man who does not want kids cutting through his yard. His only reason is he does not like it, and, that is reason enough.

It is still ridiculous.

Ridiculous is a matter of if your craft is faster than a missile or not.

Same is true for regular TLV-BOM flight.

Why not fly NW and go around Sumatra then SE to SYD?

From reading all these contributions, I have gotten to know what real tweets are. Most are seemingly inane, meaningless and off the subject. I think there should be a minimum of words to put down before it's accepted for publication. Say 50. You can do it.

religion and culture have no place in the skies. the world is not as big as it once was. time to get with the program. Even if it means fighter escorts.
