FlightAware’s Redesigned Flight Tracking Page

प्रस्तुत

FlightAware is excited to announce our new flight tracking page, our largest redesign to the flight page in our 12 year history. We’ve kept all the same important content and mapping features as we spent almost a year re-designing it to be easier to understand and more usable. (flightaware.com) और अधिक...

Hello Daniel, did I just miss it or what happened to the link to view all flights for a particular company.
dbaker
dbaker 1
It's on the right side next to the map under "Airline Information" -- the link is "all flights"

duch26x 1
I notice it now for the airlines but not for non-airlines (i.e. LXJ, EJA, LBQ)

Good catch, we'll fix it.

Photo's of the individual Aircraft are gone, Just photos of the "Top" models are displayed. Hope that gets fixed.

Are you referring to an airline or non-airline flight?
Muchits
Muchits 5
Daniel I believe he is referring to airline flights. For example if I search flight information for N672DL I get that flight info but a picture of N633DL shows up. In the old format, a picture of the specific ship would be visible.

By the way thanks for all your work on things Daniel, I know you all are working to improve flight tracking and I'm sure there will be some growing pains. It's great that you are on the forum and accesible. I do have a question: On the old flight tracking pages the aircraft type would be in italics until FlightAware received the flight plan. I don't see that feature in the latest tracking. Is there another way to ascertain when the actual flight planed route, altitude, and speed have been input into the system and received by FlightAware from the FAA versus just the canned route that is proposed by the FlightAware system?

Best regards,
Joe

Thanks for the clarification. This is a known issue we're working on now - when tracking an airline flight using the tail #, the photo thumbnail doesn't work as expected. We should have it fixed in the next day or so.

Thanks Philip, are you all working on a means for us to see when the flight plan has actually been filed with the FAA?

It's like jumping in a new airplane. It's uncomfortable for awhile until you find where everything is and can go to it in your sleep. Then it feels like a cozy home. Keep up the good work FA!

When tracking a particular flight #, is it possible to include the tail # of the a/c as well? I have always expected to see this information!

On both the old and new versions, we display the tail number for PiAware feeders or commercial customers.

I agree... if you can show the aircraft owner why not the actual tail number? Would save a trip to Flight Stats where I currently go to get a tail number for a flight.

When I was Operations Officer of a Squadron that operated from Carriers, I learned one thing early on. People don't like change. But change can be good. Give it a chance. It's no different from the first day you signed on tp Flight Aware.

Very nice improvements; a better presentation of the data from a readability perspective.

Unrelated to the new page I have noticed an issue associated with the tracking of some flights. I'm not sure what a solution would be. Occasionally there are two flights airborne at the same time with the same flight number. It's usually because a terminal leg is sufficiently delayed to be in the air when the next day initial leg takes off. The system tracking defaults to the newest leg, but draws some interesting routes and computes some interesting flight times.

I have noticed it most with ANZ1. Recently ANZ1 left London on the way to LAX when ANZ1 from LAX to Auckland was still in the air (normal as this flight is chronically late). It computed the flight time from London to Auckland at 55 minutes. I wouldn't mind being on that flight.

In aviator mode, the airline info and flight data jump down to display under the map rather than on the right side where the other data is displayed. Is this by design?

I noticed now that FA no longer logs recent look-ups. Yesterday's activities still show, but none of today's activity showed up. Also the use of three letter airport identifiers may be acceptable in the US, but overseas that does not work(EGLL versus LHR). The old version showed both.

dbaker 3
We'll fix the recent activity. As far as ICAO codes, click the settings icon and you can enable that.

Additional feedback: The use of space on the new layout is poor. More scanning and page scrolling is needed to view the same information as before. Please work to "pack" the information in to a more easily read format. Again, change for the sake of change is not improvement.

Not everyone pulls up the page on a cell phone. There appears to be a widespread trend to tailor site to that platform.

I am not a commercial user but something of an enthusiast who has an interest in an occasional flight. Since I get it for free I can hardly complain and of course it is completely your business to do as you see fit.
I will continue to visit as I find the squawks & pics of interest, but for tracking and flight history etc, FA is now trailing other offerings for types like me.

The flight route is still available and is now displayed in the "Flight Data" section, which is usually just below the flight map.

Note that we do not always have the route available for flights operating outside of our primary coverage areas, same limitation as before.

Search for flight, tail, airport, or city search panel appears to have a problem.
Select Airport, enter airport city (e.g. Everett) and it fails with message
" You must select ....." Any city entered generates the message, Chicago, Everett, Timbukthree. Looks like a lookup lockup lockout

Why can't anybody stop trying to fix what's not broken? Why must everything be "dumbed down" for the unwashed masses? I can't find anything I'm looking for on your new page.

For instance, the next instance listed for KLM624 is for Tuesday 12/6/16. Why isn’t the real next flight of KLM624, which is scheduled for Monday 12/5/16, listed? On the KLM website it shows as Mon 05 Dec, 16:00, delayed.

Why can’t you display the tail number for commercial aircraft?

End of rant.
dbaker

Thanks for the bug report, Terry, we'll fix the KLM issue. It is certainly not an intentional design choice.

On both the old and new versions, we display the tail number for PiAware feeders or commercial customers.

I'm with Terry on this one. Why change something that works so well?

Information is all over the place now, and there is much more "white space" between important information. This necessitates more scrolling, whereas earlier I could scroll once and see everything at a glance.

Looks like one of those newfangled "let's make this look good for mobile users" decisions. Just like the new and "improved" google maps.

As a desktop user, this is very disappointing.

Any way to switch back? The information displayed is the same; it's just that the display of that information is different. No logical reason that prevents it from being an option...

You also have the option of not looking at FlightAware anymore, if the trauma is too much for you. Or you could be thankful that a great site like this is available and the technology exists to be able to track and monitor aircraft, period. When I was a kid I used binoculars or I'd badger my dad into driving me to the airport. We've come a long way, baby. Every website out there is constantly transforming it's looks and functions. That's progress, no way around it.
PLANESOLUTIONS

We don't "look at" Flight Aware. We have multiple people using it day and night as a business tool. Changes that make our company less efficient are not desirable. There are other flight tracking services out there and until now we have not seriously explored them as flightaware.com was so good. With the recent change, information we find useless (ie: fuel burn) clutters the view of more important tracking details. So yes, we have the option of not looking at Flight Aware by using another service.

Daniel, Just like others on this page, I liked the old page, however, I am SLOWLY getting used to the new one. It seems like it has a lot of potential. My one question is how you get the fuel amounts. Is that given to you by the airline or is it just an estimated number?
bovineone
Jeff Lawson 2
Fuel amounts are estimated using our own algorithms, the flight route planned, and generic information about the filed aircraft type.

Using iphone and ipad I am not finding anyway to set notification for a flight a week out. If changing alert to time a week out it keeps the same earlier flight date. Only getting flights within a day of current date in search results. Historical flight is covered but not future flights.
