I flew out St. Paul Downtown Airport (KSTP) that same day at 1530 central time. The weather went from MVFR to VFR almost on an hourly rotation all day. It was easy to tell by looking at NOAAs satellite loop and by sticking your head out the window that all of 300 to 1000 agl cloud layers were being spit out from the west. Although ceiling level wasn't a major concern for me (I was practicing an ILS approach) I still watched the weather religiously. I hope I never lose that habit. I hate reading these stories but it's excellent training.
