American Airlines Plans to Hire 1,500 Pilots
American plans to start recruiting new pilots this fall. It's already hiring 1,500 new flight attendants. (abcnews.go.com) More...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
When I started with Northwest Airlines in the fall of 1951, the oldest pilot, Leon "Deke" Delong, was approaching 65 and retired a year later on his 65th birthday. His last flights were piloting a DC-3 from MSP to YWG and back (the Yom Kipper Clipper). There was quite a ceremony on the ramp after his last flight. Shortly afterward an age limit of 60 years for all pilots was instituted. When NWA later ordered the Boeing-707, only pilots under 55 were permitted flight training for the new aircraft. That caused a bit of a ruckus. Age is relative, isn't it?
Wonderful story. Thanks!
two years from now it'll be american lays off 1500 as bankruptcy looms
AAL (AMR Corp) is in BK now! They can't file again soon after emerging. And, these pilot openings are to be expected as older people are coming up for retirement.
*IF* the USAir merger does happen, that side of the fence also has a fairly large number reaching 60 (65, for those who continue under the onerous "new" rules).
