28 seconds to survive

प्रस्तुत

This is one of the most viewed Air Crash investigation episode. On 21 February 2008, Santa Bárbara Airlines Flight 518, en route from Mérida to Caracas, Venezuela, veered off course and crashed into the side of a mountain shortly after takeoff. All 46 passengers and crew aboard the plane died. Investigators determined that the aircraft took off with inoperative navigation due to the pilots’ failure to do their pre-flight checklist. Thanks... I would not have said them if I did not mean them.... Many people look at is being entertainment, but I watch the episode and make my own deductions as to what happened. 9 times out of 10 I am either right on or along the same lines. I plan to watch it tonight as I have not seen this one... Going to watch it in 3D... Should be quite interesting.

What do you need to do to watch this in 3D?

A TV with . I use the Toshiba 55TL515U ( http://us.toshiba.com/tv/led/55tl515u/ ) even though it is not manufactured any longer just look for one that has " Tri Vector™ 2D to 3D Conversion". Toshiba is the only brand that I have seen that has this technology and it works pretty well. That view of the plane hitting the mountain was like it coming right at you.

NONE of these inks are actually available. Everyone seems to have been preempted by FOX. What the heck do they have against improving air safety? I know, I know, they think it is about protecting their copyright. I think they are over zealous in that regard. Has anyone tried to get them to post a link to the story?

FOX does what they want, not what they should. Has always been like that, public interest, public safety, it all means nothing to them.

A heartbreaker, and so avoidable. Although the chain of events was different, this one reminds me of the AA Cali crash in 1995.
sparkie624
sparkie624 2
Now that you mention it, it does... AA they entered the wrong FMS data, where here they just didn't allow their instruments to come to life. There is no good reason to accept the loss of life on this over such stupidity. I know pilots miss stuff on the walk around, but taking off without attitude and heading reference goes beyond anything that is acceptable. Those pilots both in my opinion murdered all those people on board as well as effectively committing suicide.

Why would you not do your pre-flight? Its whenever you dont check it, something'll go wrong.

At 44:55 ... as a result of this crash Merida was closed to commercial traffic as being too dangerous. That seems odd to me, given the pilot error. Were there other issues that led to the closure and this crash merely the excuse? Comments anyone?
sparkie624
sparkie624 2
Too many people making unapproved shortcuts and even ATC Approving them. It was very close into the mountains... You will note when they were taking off, how close the traffic was that was coming in.

Looking back I think one thing that was a contributing factor was the captain wanted to hurry up and get out, otherwise they were going to have to wait on inbound traffic, therefore he did not give it that extra 28 seconds that would have saved them.

Was this a fit of pique on the part of the crew, or was this real? I was not there, nor obviously were people making comments below. We have all seen F/A/s doing great kind, brave things. We have also all seen F/As giving in to the "I have a bit of authority syndrome and am using it". From previous Southwest stories it seems part of the F/A group might have the bit between their mouth, so to speak! I think this expulsion was probably not necessary.

In fact, pilot pay has nothing to do with it. You have to source the problem and eliminate it, not throw money at it.

You want to a place to start? Pick up your favorite aviation related magazine (Flying for me, Plane & Pilot for others) and peruse through the countless "90 days ZERO to ATP" ads. That would be the first place to start improving performance in the cockpit.
