AAL to Close SFO Crew Base

प्रस्तुत

American Airlines will close a crew base in San Francisco after unusually large numbers of pilot retirements left staffing levels “critically short.” The action comes three days after American said it would cut fourth-quarter seating capacity by 3 percent, in part because of the pilot shortage. In September and October, 240 pilots retired. (www.bloomberg.com) और अधिक...

This must have been in the works for a while. We stayed at a KSFO-area hotel for a few days in June, and many of the flight crews on the airport shuttle every day were talking about American's plans to close that crew base. And it wasn't just AA crews who seemed to know about it.

Does AA have any pilots on furlough? Just curious.

Yes, approximately 650 yet to be offered recall. A little over 1000 offered recall and deferred.

Hmmm... That's a bit odd to me. Close the SFO crew base... "after unusually large numbers of pilot retirements left staffing levels 'critically short.'" ? "Short staffing levels" can't be the main reason they closed the base then can it?

SFO is almost token service for AA serving mostly long haul domestic. 767 services to/fm New York and almost entirely 738 service to other major cities BOS, ORD, DFW and National. Two or three 757 flights to DFW and ORD, but no logical international connections not served from DFW, ORD or JFK. San Jose is all M83 service.

I doubt they will abandon SFO but will provide connections from the three hubs to keep the onward service from their international flights from Europe.

Think back a few years....SFO is not an employer friendly base as they insist company policies be changed nationwide to conform with local mores where you can marry your brother or neighbor's goat and still have the employer pay for medical care and benefits for the domestic partnership.

San Jose isn't all MD-83 service. SJC-ORD is now operated with 738. SJC-DFW is with MD-80 series.

I dont see what domestic partnerships or goats have anything to do with this article. You might be ignorant but not everyone is. God forbid the closed minded thinking and practices of conservative America have to give way to equality for ALL peoples.

The fact that you have difficulty seeing it only adds one to the denominator when surveying the question "Does San Francisco municipal policies add to the cost of doing business there?" Obviously, you understanding of business and economics is wholly lacking. Let me explain it to you in words of two syllables if possible.

United almost moved their base from SFO because of a demand by the city for the company to pay benefits to domestic partners through the entire company, not just in SFO. At the time the costs of treating High Five disease alone would have been onerous and there would be little change now except they are living longer with even pricier medicine. END SIMPLIFICATION

Frankly, I could care less which orifice an individual uses for personal satisfaction but there is no reason for other employees to pay the cost and to disadvantage the company which must pass them to the customer or the employee.

From the Washington Post: IGNORANUS: a person who is not just stupid but an asshole as well.
