ATC Stops Saudia 777 From Landing on Closed Runway as Similar Incident Probed
Air traffic controllers at Islamabad International Airport (ISB) prevented a potentially catastrophic runway incident after stopping a Saudi Airlines Boeing 777-300ER moments before it attempted to land on a runway closed for maintenance. The near miss comes as Pakistan and India both investigate separate runway-misalignment incidents involving foreign carriers, raising renewed concerns over pilot situational awareness and adherence to NOTAMs across the region. The pilots should be fired. End of story.
I wish that acronyms were not used without being explained at the beginning. Not everyone reading these articles has aviation experience. So what does NOTAM mean? DGCA?
NOTAM -> Notices to Airmen. In more sensitive times, that was changed to "air missions" but maybe that is not the case anymore. Contains notices that taxiways are closed, navigation aids are down, some airspace is off limits, for example around sports stadiums when games are being played, runways closed, etc. Dispatchers and pilots are supposed to review these to see if... maybe there is a runway closed.
DGCA is India's civil aviation authority.
Presumably, if these pilots were flying wide-bodies, they must have been fairly senior. Stuff like a closed runway and dealing with instrument failures should be fairly routine to them.

aa8ta, thank you for clarifying. It's really annoying for people like me who have an interest but are not well versed in all the acronyms.
Low vis landing attempt, both ILS in the cockpit go off, so the pilots just go ahead and continue the approach?
We're not in Kansas any more, Toto.
