Apparently Cosmos Kramer is spending Christmas in Las Vegas. I wonder if he chased his ex-roommate there.

A crazy act deserves a crazy punishment.
I think 2 hours strapped to a stunt biplane should do it.

I wonder what exactly the cops approaching on the wing were planning to do when they reached him.

Taze him and grab him!
Basically get him off so the airplane, crew and passengers could co to use to destination. Simple, really. It’s called dealing with the situation when asked to respond. Try working a shift at the airport to find out....

I think the wing would need a high level inspection for damage from his weight and potential tampering with its parts.

Oh, I know what the po-po do. The patrol supervisor in my head was saying, "Approaching this subject of unknown intent and capabilites while balanced precariously on a wing 10-12' off the pavement is gonna get one of us badly hurt, the agency sued, or both. Why rush it?" Happily, our actor resolved the dilemma unassisted. No out-of-court settlement for him.

alex hidveghy 1
Um, people on PCP don’t sue, they wouldn’t know how to. It fries the brain and you end up like this guy. No lawyer would touch him. Not if they want to keep their reputation intact....so, no worries in that front, mate!
He violated several statutes, so they will likely throw the book at him.
No one gets sued, just incarcerated after medical treatment and a criminal record. As a side note, he will never work at any certificated airport after this.

I would have knocked him off the wing with a fire hose.

Save water. Let the guy climb something as slippery as ice and see what happens. Same end result, case closed....

I told him not to play craps, but, noooooo he had to play and lost all his money. The bet regarding "cleaning the windows of a plane," with the maintenance guy from McCarran was the final straw.

Well that sure would be an interesting way to get to Portland! They should have just taxied out and taken off ... ;-)
alexa320
alex hidveghy 2
They did taxi out! And were about to line up.....professional pilots don’t just takeoff when there’s an abnormal situation and yoyre still on the ground. It’s all in the training and CRM. Basic stuff, really. They did just fine, trust me....

No, not this time!
It was all over the world within hours of happening.....

Looks like there is something on the ground by the wing that looks like a ladder.

I assume c,imbed the wheel, then flaps at takeoff setting. It’s amazing what you can do when you’re high as a kite! Same as scaling the airport perimeter fence with razor wire....

Judging from how hard he hit the tarmac, he'll need medical help too.

Just gun the engines. He'll fall off of there. No big thing.

PIC shutdown both engines. It’s a natural thing to do when you see an unusual situation and use an abundance of caution.

If you watch the video in the Twitter link at the bottom of the article, he does fall off as the cops approach him. Hits rather hard too.

Seems LAS needs to do more to heighten security than anything else. The article rather makes light of the fact this guy was able to climb over the airport fence and get into the secured area of the airport. He could have gone anywhere.

The airport is surrounded by high fencing topped with barbed wire. I guess we could build the Berlin Wall around every airport and hire East German guards to shoot people. Or, we could hire thousands of police to stand every 20 feet to make sure nobody gets through. Of course the safest option is to just close down the airport. That would make it 100% safe!

It seems odd that the pilot "contacted Air Traffic Control". As a pilot, I'm not clear what they could have done. I think it would have been more useful to contact Ground Traffic Control (or possibly the Tower). A very odd choice.
alexa320
alex hidveghy 4
Nothing odd about it whatsoever!

They would have been talking to various ATC frequencies starting g with RAMP, GRD and then TWR. All normal, standard stuff at most airports.

What could ATC have done? Why, call, the authorities like OPERATIONS, METRO POLICE! Again , all standard protocol. That’s how you get people to respond. Happens all the time.
LAS is not some podunk airfield!
You sound like someone not involved in aviation?.....

a reporter that doesn't know the difference between ATC and local frequencies. the pilot would only have been talking to ground.
alexa320
alex hidveghy 3
In this case TWR, since he was holding short of the RWY and waiting to line up.

"After about a minute on the wing, the man tried to climb up the scimitar". What exactly is a "scimitar"?

“I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor, just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!”
alexa320

One of three types of winglets the B737 has. Named after a type of curved sword called a scimitar. This type also has a downward portion as well as the larger part he tried to climb. It is very smooth, so whatever he was going to try was not going to work from the git-go.
Mr. Boeing does not design and build airplanes to be used in this way, surprise, surprise!

I just hope the airport doesn't have a knee jerk reactionary close down on of the worlds best spotting areas designated for the public.
alexa320
alex hidveghy 2
Don’t worry, they won’t! The viewing area has been closed since late March!!
And they don’t do “ knee-jerk” reactions either. It’s an FAA-certified airport with DHS/TSA rules and regulations. This is a rare event. No airport is foolproof. And there are a lot of crazies high on substance abuse out there.
