- Fine, but rather ineffective, folks will get to USA via Canada or South America. March 15 on Flightaware, counted 36 active flights between MADRID and South America.
7 active to/from Havana ( including MXP Milan ) which may have been a charter. Flightaware shows that Alitalia is also operating Rome-Sao Paulo and Rome - Rio on March 15

Somebody always has to make the first move, perhaps those other countries will now stop flights between them. And, as they say, it's no longer about stopping the spread of the virus but rather slowing it, the flattening of the infection curve.

WHO and ICAO are trying to coordinate. See link. However, national priorities and commercial priorities will win the day. (not just USA) Most airlines might be run out of business and have Extreme pressure to keep flying where they can. AF, KLM, Iberia still moving possibly infected folks to Latin America.

On the other hand it’s a lot more productive to consult and coordinate with your partners, or at least give them an early warning. Now there are thousands of people trying to come home from every corner of the world, making repatriation very difficult. She finally managed to find a way home including four different flights, the last one from Casablanca to Montreal. When she arrived at CMN she learned that Royal Air Maroc had cancelled all flights to Canada, without coordination or consulting nor giving a heads up to their partners, following the bad example set by the Trump administration.

I believe the travel ban does not apply to US citizens or legal residents. They can return at any time without restriction. Of course, the travel ban may cause the flights they might have taken to be canceled.

That’s why coordination and collaboration with your allies is important. Aviation is an international business, many non-US citizens depend on US airlines and airports to get home, and if they get stranded because of a ban they might be unable to find alternative routes. That’s why these decisions should be concerted, not everybody for himself in their own silo.

Things change very fast these days. Monday afternoon Trudeau announced border closure for non-citizen, non-residents of Canada. Also a G7 announcement about coordinated EU border closures.

Except he did not include Americans in this border closure. That’s what allies normally do. As for a coordinated move by the G7, that’s what should have happened in the first place, instead of blindsiding friends and allies with a sledgehammer approach.
