Uhmm, your 'tense' is in error, as the "Grand Dame' of the skies is quite alive and active hauling just about anything that 'can go by air' by air! Quite unlike the a380 and a340, both approaching early retirement.

I got a ride on a 380 the other day London to Miami - while I the bucket list (and not planned as it was a flight to avoid a hurricane)...sure isn't a 787....was cool to be hanging out in the back by the stairwell, however.

New Year’s Day 1971 I flew in a “747” from JFK to Madrid in route to my first Navy assignment aboard the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy, stationed in the Mediterranean at the time.
After two weeks I flew to Malta and met the ship.
On the flight over I was one of 27 passengers and there were 12 crew members. Needless to say I got the best of service.

Any 747's still flying commercial passenger routes? I was hoping to fly on one in first class at least once. But that's looking not likely now.

As of Sep 2022 there are 449 747s still in use. Lufthansa has the most including 27 747-8Is. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Boeing_747_operators
