Here's a link to twitter video from video by LAPD.

Look like the heroic cops yanked the pilot out of the wreckage with about 5 seconds to spare ahead of the speeding train.

Yet another example of how police officers risk their lives, without a second thought, everyday on our behalf. Thank the next one you see!

Great job by those officers. Gonna take a ton of duct tape to fix that Cessna though.

Take a look at this analysis on YouTube by a GA pilot who flies out of Whiteman regularly. The pilot of the incident a/c appears to have done everything by the book for an aborted takeoff.

Planes, trains, and automobiles sometimes just get too close to one another. Great job by the police to get that guy out. It would have been horrible to survive a plane crash and then die by a train. I mean, who do you sue? This is California. Somebodies got to get sued.

I don't know what's worse, that his airplane got slammed by a train soon after "landing" or that it happened in Pacoima, of all places...

The article from the Daily news is not accurate. The aircraft crashed 42 seconds after being cleared for takeoff from runway 12.

Check out this bystander's video. Dude nearly gets his head taken off by flying debris.

This video is an example of not understanding physics. The guy taking the video is lucky he didn't lose his head at worst.

Why was rail traffic not stopped? It looked like police may have had enough time to call dispatchers…there was tape and multiple police cars there to block the Intersection. Great job though in getting the pilot out!

Grade crossings here in eastern PA have an identifier and an 800- number visibly posted on a pole. The 800- number goes straight to the Dispatcher. One night I and several others were waiting at a crossing in Columbia PA,alongside the Susquehanna River, which crossing was blocked by a long, stopped, Norfolk Southern coal train. I phoned the 800- number and the person at the other end apologised and a few minutes later the train moved down the line, clearing the crossing. I don't know if they have the same procedure in other places, but you may check for such a post on crossings.

It seems to me very desirable to have some method of quickly alerting the nearest Dispatcher for an emergency situation, such as a stuck vehicle or trailer at a crossing so that signals or radio can be used to stop traffic on the rail line.

A spokesman for the Metro train said the 911 call to stop rail service didn’t get to dispatch in time and cited the signs with toll free number at every crossing as the fastest way to reach them in circumstances like this!

There is no excuse for that train blasting through that intersection at 60+ mph. This is a failure of infrastructure. Any city and county 911 system should have immediate quick dial access to 7x24 train engineer communication if a report comes in about a vehicle (or a plane in this case), on the tracks. Forget dispatch. Someone there might be in the bathroom or getting coffee in the break room. From what I understand here there were at least five minutes between the crash and when the police showed up and pulled him out. Plenty of time to get that passenger train stopped.

The real issue is city leaders allowing development right up to and next door to airports. Sadly, this is happening everywhere and not just in SoCal.

I said the same thing on my FB local emergency page and some lady laughed at me. I wrote, "I know trains don't stop on a dime and may take a long distance to stop, but at least it could have slowed down enough maybe" Her reply was: Really??

Forget the bathroom or break, in NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland or California in general... they'd still be waiting!

I think it takes a mile or more to stop a train at that speed. In the video, it looked to be a lot closer. So, yes, if they could have gotten the word sooner. But what makes an engineer think he can just blast through an area like that without caution?

I worked on the railway for a few years and trains do take a bit of distance to stop. It’s steel wheels on steel rail so if too much brake is applied the wheels skid and create flat spots, then when the train starts to go again those flat spots pound the rail and that can lead to broken rails which leads to trains in the ditch which is something railways try to avoid. So depending on speed and weight the Hogger(what they call the guy who sleeps behind the controls) has to stop the train in the safest manner possible. This was a passenger train so it’s light and skids easily, next train might be hauling chemicals that could wipe out a small city if it derails on a broken rail so all that comes into play and the people who think the train should have just stopped have no clue as to how trains work.

Railroads have speed limits as well. The engineer is allowed to travel at the speed set for that stretch of track. If it is 60MPH, then he can do so as long as the lights do not having him stopping somewhere.

The closest light I can see along that stretch of tracks is not quite a mile and a half south of the airport and the intersection where the plane crashed where a siding splits off. Remember that trains do not operate like motor vehicles on city streets. They are given warnings at one light that they may have to stop further up the line by a second light unlike you where one signal tells you that you have to stop.

How was it the train’s fault that someone parked an airplane on the tracks? Trains don’t operate like cars and cannot just stop or go around an obstruction.

You know it is NOT your day when you crash your plane AND almost get hit by a train. Sometimes God is just a dick...

This must-have caused another LA area traffic jam.

I believe last year there was a crash next to the same airport. The plane, might have been a Cessna, crashed on final and fell on the street adjacent to the airport boundary. It hit one of those large UPS delivery trucks, a parked car or two and ended up on the front yard of a house catching on fire. I think the packages in the UPS truck were toast.
NicTanner
Nic Tanner 1
Nope. Different area of San Diego. That Cessna 340 was destined for Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport (KMYF). The crash was caught on several security doorbell videos from nearby homes. Also, that UPS truck was approaching a stop sign at the corner where the house was it and set ablaze. The truck was hit by the plane and the driver was killed. There is video from neighbors showing the fires right after it happened showing the UPS truck with a massive gouge in the front half and engulfed in flames. Sad bad day.

Actually I just realized this crash is in the LA area so not even remotely close....

Just thinking, maybe pull the damaged aircraft off the tracks? Plenty of man power to do so. Makes for good drama, something we need more of. More hero's, yeah!

The people are more important than the airplane; you can replace an airplane, but you can't replace a human.
Leardriverfl390
Leardriverfl390 1
It's not about salvaging the airplane. It would have given the paramedics time to properly extract the pilot. Just saying looks like the train damage and possible more injuries was possible avoidable by removing the aircraft from the tracks. Easy to do with a few people pulling on the wing struts. Oh well more heroes and no injuries, that is what's important. Bent metal is not! Luckily everyone got to go home at the end of the day!
