KLM to fund development of fuel-efficient Flying-V plane
(CNN) — The development of a V-shaped, fuel-efficient airplane design known as the Flying-V is getting a boost with the announcement that Dutch national carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will help to fund it. Intended to improve the sustainability of air travel, the Flying-V was conceived by Justus Benad, then a student at the Technical University of Berlin, and developed by researchers at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, also known as TU Delft. It will likely have elevons like most flying wings and deltas.
Different blended wing body aircraft concepts have been around for quite some time, hope this project can provide more info addressing to aviation amateurs, and in particular, how this new design overcomes the shortcomings of previous endeavors. Well, at least, this project got a bit commercial funding into academic research, not a bad thing.
So will the entire leading edge be heated? Seems like an awful lot of bleed air.
