Donald Trump’s Aging Air Fleet Gives His Bid, and His Brand, a Lift

प्रस्तुत

A close look at Mr. Trump’s two airplanes — the 757 and a smaller jet used on the campaign trail — and three helicopters, however, suggests that their value rests chiefly in their marketing potential, with the Trump stamp of status masking the fleet’s age. (www.nytimes.com) और अधिक...

Ask the airlines who fly the 757 about it's performance and reliability.

I used to fly them here in the US and overseas. Great airplane especially if they were equipped with RR RB-211 engines, lots of excess power there. Nice machine and a pleasure to fly.

There's also a huge glut of used 57's, the less used ones are being converted to cargo aircraft.
United has retired all 57-200' in domestic config - outside of the 300's on cross country and Hawaii.
The International configured and PS are still flying. Miss them, they blow away the 37-900's

What IS incredible is the power of this man, for better or worse, like him or hate him, to create a buzz. Media across the country can start a topic or write an article and it becomes a lightning rod. This is a crap article and look at us - we can't stop talking about it!

I don't see the "age" point. The two VC-25As (747s) used by the president are over 26 years old.

Not a fan of Trump at all, but that is a dumb point. He used to fly 727's, but just like any smart business he no longer saw the feasibility of a tri-engined aircraft.

Well - that's the government for you. But - this article wasn't to compare a government's aircraft with his... but more his vs. those of other wealthy folks, CEOs and the like that have their own planes. Most of them are nowhere near as old.

So... If Mr. Trump doesn't feel the need to spend money on some FLASHY NEW Aircraft, it is NOW a subject for debate??? Are you people REALLY that desperate to find ANYTHING NEGATIVE about Mr. Trump or his Companies, that you have to resort to attacking the AGE of his AIRCRAFT??... Let's see you talk about the 25-30 year Aircraft that you and my family are forced to fly on DAILY?

The VC-25's in question are probably the most documented, meticulously maintained airframes in the the USAF inventory, (save, a few very funky bombers at Whiteman AFB) is what Mr. Hermes is alluding to.

"The spare aircraft parts industry had little regulation in many places in the world at the time of the Partnair Flight 394 accident. The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT), which oversees the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), examined the scope of the spare parts in the United States. The USDOT audited the FAA's inventory and found that 39% of the parts in the bins were forged.
The FAA investigated false parts and captured illegal parts dealers in sting operations. The FAA found that there was an industry for making thousands of worn and inferior parts to look like newly manufactured parts. At the time of the Partnair accident, aircraft parts were required to have documentation with signatures indicating that the parts were authentic. The FAA found that illegal business forged FAA tags to make the parts appear authentic. Schiavo said that many of the operators signed the tags with forged signatures of real inspectors. Friedman said that the tags had more monetary value than the actual illegal parts. The Americans initially believed that the proliferation of false parts mainly affected only smaller airlines; Schiavo said that smaller airlines and repair stations were usually the businesses that were the most likely to accept false parts. The FAA later found forged parts in larger operations; in particular Air Force One, the aircraft used by the President of the United States, had fraudulent parts

Who cares about age as long as the plane is maintained... He certainly is not logging anything close to Delta or United.... The thing that I would be concerned with is hours and cycles.... I know it is well below 40,000 cycles because at that point it is almost uneconomical to maintain due to the FAA Required Aging Aircraft Program and a plane of that size usually requires about 3 months downtime when not under an airline phase or scheduled maintenance scheme.

Like him or not the article is a joke. If this reporter investigated the actual logbooks of all aircraft in question, we could get some insight to the actual safety for Trump. General age of a plane has nothing to do with its worthiness or safety. Ask Delta or American about the MD80. Loud but it works.

CNN reported that one of Trump's companies is footing the bill of airplanes, buses, flags (and maybe his fluffy toupee too). So in reality it is Uncle Sam, mind you.

How is Uncle Sam possibly paying? Because he can deduct the expenses on his taxes? That is true of any business expense.
canuck44
canuck44 6
If he rented from NetJet they would still be deducting the cost. Uncle Sam is paying for nothing only receiving less money extorted from a different taxpayer. Trump still pays the costs through his company, gets charged business taxes through the company and then is taxed again if he takes a profit out. Political contributions are not deductible to either Trump or his company.

And in your MIND that is how he makes a LIVING/PROFIT? He spends $100 MILLION Dollars SOLELY so he can get the $33 MILLION in TAX BREAKS??? Seems kind of a STUPID RATIONALIZATION YOU HAVE THERE??
ArthurNetteler
Arthur Netteler -2
Mike SUT... Are you from "Greece"? That is the ONLY explanation for the rational in your above comment. Do you know what JUST the "Landing Fees" are at say ORD? I DO. Back in the mid 1980's it was $450 for a DC9! Now let's talk about the TOTAL hourly cost the fly a 757... At today's market, it would be in the ballpark of $7,600/HOUR generally speaking. I find it very hard to get the numbers to come out that this is somehow a PROFIT MACHINE for Mr. Trump. As he is the one PAYING all these Expenses. Let us NOT forget Private Security, Staff and Crews needed for Mr. Trump to travel basically 24/7 for the past 10 MONTHS! As well as the Staff, Crews and Security for his FAMILY MEMBERS, traveling around the USA on his behalf. Please Sir, if you are that STUPID as to even think of this nonsense equation, I HOPE YOU ARE NOT A VOTING USA CITIZEN!!

Mr. Trump has not used ONE CENT of USA TAXPAYER MONEY for any of his Aircraft's Purchase, Maintenance or Operation! Furthermore to try and insinuate that Mr. Trump is flying around in worn-out JUNK is not only IGNORANT, but STUPID. The FAA as well as Private Companies have adapted some of Mr. Trump's Maintenance Scheduling and Operations as the BASES for updates in Aircraft Review and Maintenance! Where is YOUR Article on the AGE of the Aircraft of United Airlines, Southwest, Philippine Airlines, FEDEX, UPS that are flying some of the OLDEST Aircraft in the Commercial World! For those readers who are making disparaging comments about this article and the author, you people have missed the whole point of the story...just learn to read...in this case the title "Donald Trump’s Aging Air Fleet Gives His Bid, and His Brand, a Lift" says it all. Try to stay focused.
I would also suggest to read some of the backstory provided by internal links in the article, including from the WSJ.
Trump is praying on those who are misinformed or too lazy to dig into facts and history.
Remember he is a showman in the best tradition of Barnem and Bailey....a snake charmer who counts on the uneducated. Let us not forget he has no stated, outlined foreign policy and his mismanagement of money (several companies gone bankrupt)is nearly legendary.
I do pity you Americans for having no viable choices in your upcoming election this year.
