Imagine being a business traveler at Dane County regional yesterday heading to Chicago. You think you are going to be stuffed into the back of a CRJ100 but instead there is a 744 at the terminal. I bet a plane that big looks strange at that airport.

No business Traveler got on that trip to Chicago. Pilots and Flight Crew only.

Yes. It took the Football team and or Band from Orlando to Chicago and then flew with no passengers to the Home Base in Chicago.....

The cost of the flight from Chicago to get the team, and, the cost from the destination (lets say Dade in Madison) to Chicago is called a "Re positioning Flight) and is factored in to the cost of the Charter.

Do you think, for one iota of a second that the President of China (for Example) would get on a US Plane where the CIA would wire tap the entire cabin???????????? Forget China - what country does not have their own planes for such travel?

Correct! It would be pointless putting a 744 on the sched (for one flight/day) for such a short flight and have all the time it needs to sell the seats with the complete unknown of what charter flying is actually all about. That is to say, we go when the customer tells us to go. Not when a schedule tells us. (side bar: keeping schedule and having a schedule are two different things in the charter business). Also, there might not even be any lqiuor on the plane.. tell that to a F/C customer to ORD that there's no booze and honestly, there's no food either since we didn't lift anything at Dane.
NFL team planes are repositioned empty after every game return. Packers fly Delta and after they arrive at Austin Straubel, it ends up empty later that day or night at MSP or DTW.

Looks like it to me, too. According to their 2012 annual report, they do have a 744 in their fleet dedicated to charter flights.

Plus, all of United's charter flights (for MLB, NFL, etc.) are all in the 1800 series.

1-Jan, Jax to Lincoln: Uni of Nebraska just finished the Gator Bowl that day.

2-Jan, MCO to Dane: Uni of Wisconsin also played on 1-Jan in the Capital One Bowl (but played later in the day and just stayed the night.

My Question: Who were the lucky in First Class? N197UA is three class configured.. Alum booster? University President? Head Coach?

From experience, Coaches / Admin in First Class. Alums in Business. Team and Team Managers in Coach. May have - or did not include the Band. A team like that for a bowl game travels with 140 or 150 folks.

Is cheaper for them to put the Band and Team on the same flight. But, you only know by looking at other flights 'tween the two airports.

Look how the Pro's travel: Oakland Raiders - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xyGH0I2QH8

Sometimes perhaps a President needs to make a trip incognoto.cheaper than the full circus the normally follows the painted AF 1 together with the army of secret service agents and vehicles and god knows what else.......or maybe it was Santa going back to his retirement lodge until next December!!.

Remember the B747SP? That was built for such trips was it not? High density short sector?

Are you crazy? Look at my post - spells it out. Not Presidents - Athletes

The President goes nowhere without full protection and facilities necessary for the office. You will not see POTUS on charter or commercial aircraft.

The 747SP was built to fly nonstop from Los Angeles to Tokyo and Iran to the USA. The engines on the 747-100 of the time could not make the distance without a stop in Hawaii or Alaska. There were less than 50 of the 230 seat airplane made. They were a decent alternative to the tri-jets, but when it became clear the "full size" 747 could be an ultra long haul aircraft the Special Performance short body was done.

Correct! POTUS does not fly on anything that is not military metal, in this case Air Force One which is tecnically just a call sign but overall are the two 742's. To get to Andrew's, he fly's Marine One. To drive about, he's in the "beast'. In fact, when he is incognito for a lunch run, they remove the signage and flags from the beast, but it's still the beast with the best trained driver in the world. A Secret Service driver!
