Rather than cutting the screening workforce by 5,000 employees (that will surely result in longer lines), it seems like they could reduce capital expenses that are widely unpopular, like the MWS/BS machines they started deploying.

@dbaker your plan would work BUT I am sure that Chertoff's company (that sells the machines) has a much better contract with the TSA than the screeners do. Hell, they could cut the entire TSA budget and he'd still get paid.

They are definately not the front line, if i remember one certain napolitano lady said that the traveling public was the front line... lol

Finally the Republicans are doing a great job - they made sure the TSA doesn't have enough money to rape people. (Let's hope they get rid of the backscatters and the sexists and make more lines so it goes much faster)

They could do better with an even lower number of agents if they just had some basic standards for hiring!

Yes! The priorities of the American People are being served!

Although I wonder how they would make more lines with less money and less people. You want MORE TSA workers and MORE lines? shesh! :) Stop expanding gubbiment!

I remain unclear as to why we taxpayers are paying for a private business's security costs. If the airlines belive they need security, there are a number of private security firms that I am sure would be happy to fill that role.

For far too long, the airlines have been a parasite on the backs of the American taxpayer. I can't imagine the gall it would take for me to ask the taxpayer to pay for my costs when I want to fly.

For those who DO want to ride around as PASSENGERS in someone ELSE's airplane, imagine how much better service they would receive, if those PASSENGERS paid for the actual cost of operating their seats.

Peter – your statement is filled with great insight, logic and makes sense. It is a shame the concept will be lost on those unable to grasp the concept and take appropriate action to implement your plan.

LAST I CHECKED- TSA does not allow airlines to pay for their own security........ only 16 airports are allowed such in the united states, but tht possibility is cut off by government.

So speaks one of the brilliants in the US Congress: "TSA agents are no different than FBI, CIA and Secret Service agents;"

Actually, no. These are security guards with a sewn-on badge with an average double digit IQ who rely on attitude and psychological tricks to stay in power.

Once sufficiently defunded, the cash will just be tapped from elsewhere. The door has been opened and it will never, ever be closed.

Mark, are you a TSA agent?

As an airline pilot, I think the TSA is a waste of space. They are ridiculous. I can't tell you how many times I see 4 or 5 of them standing around getting paid $15 an hr, with one line open. With the standards not even being a high school diploma and "diversity" their main focus, they need more eyes to make up what one normal person would be able to do. If you want to know who the front line is, it's the general public! I trust them over TSA. Afterall, is the TSA going to stop them from coming in my cockpit? Nope!

Just one MORE bloated , over-funded Federal Agency! Just like the EPA, it SEEMED like a good idea at time of conception, but the baby has turned out to be a monster!

Airports and airlines should provide and pay for appropriate security both on the ground and in the air; passengers should pay for it through ticket prices. I travel a lot and don't need people who never travel paying for my security through their taxes. Same way people who use medical facilities and services should pay either through insurance or out of their own pockets - not mine.

why have any security at all?

Does this mean TSA will no longer offer free proctology exams. As has been said their halfway up there anyway why not finish the job. lol

Federal employees should NOT have the power to organize and engage in collective bargaining. We, the public, are their employers by the taxes we pay.

We should get copies of the whole body scans and give them to our doctors to save money on duplicate x-rays. Regarding airport security it is unlikely to change since we seem to be unable to hold anyone, corporations or people responsible when things go wrong. Anybody lose their job after 9/11? Any airlines or airport managers disciplined for allowing the terrorists on the plane?

I think cutting their budget is cutting the wrong part of their anatomy.

DOWN WITH TSA!! What a waste of time and money. They can't / wont do their jobs even when they are forewarned.

In case you don't get it, $270.000.00 ISN'T ENOUGH OF A FUNDING CUT!!!
A 100% cut would be even better.

It's 270 million, frank, not 270k. 10x more

Subject: New airport scanners
Here's a simple solution to the controversy over full-body scanners at airports.
Develop an enclosed booth that passengers step into but, instead of X-raying them, when the door closes, it will detonate any explosive device they have hidden on or in their body. The explosion will be contained within the sealed booth. This would be a win-win for everyone!
There would be no concern about racial profiling. The booth would eliminate long, expensive trials.
You're in the airport and you hear a muffled explosion, followed by an announcement over the PA system, "Attention, standby passengers, we now have a seat available on flight number..."
What's not to like?

Did anyone see the news item about the TSA suspended 12 workers and is planning to fire 36 workers and managers in Hawaii? Seems they weren't doing their jobs while screening luggage.

Do any of you remember the idiots who did security before 9/11? Much better now believe it or not. Give it back to the airlines and we'll kill 10 years of progress.

Progress being.. remove shoes, belts, and outer clothing . Surrender your children to pointless gropings, Fondle old women and old men. Make people toss out any carryon beverages or snacks? X-Ray people with prosthetic knees, etc? Progress toward what? A world order? Heil , Heil, right in the Fureher's face!
