The number "49" on the gear cover was the incorrect number. "Playtime" had been assigned number "48" for this activity. The "Race 49" designation had already been assigned to Bill Muszala's SNJ-5 "Miss Ellaneous." Capt. Johnny "Smokey" Johnson's team had altered the "9" on the fuselage to read "8" but had inadvertently failed to make the same change to the "9" down by the landing gear.

Awesome shot of this beautiful bird! Why is the outline of the USA logo on the fuselage red? Was this to identify a specific unit or something else?
From what I've read, the Red Outline was initially what was mandated for all US a/c for the markings but was dropped 3 months later - https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/naval-aviation-history/aircraft-markings.html
