Oh, man, I am SERIOUSLY going to miss seeing Mad Dogs in the skies. The sight, and the sound, of a Mad Dog pax jet taking off is, for me, the last remaining reminder of all the great large tail-mounted jetliners (Tridents, B727s, VC-10s, TU-154s, Sud Caravelles, BAC-111s, Ilyushin 62s, etc., etc.). True, there are tail-mounts flying today, but none create the memory jog of the old liners that the Mad Dog does. Definitely going to miss them. It was a thrill capturing this old Delta Dog hammering past and then making this hard climb into the sky over western New York.

I flew the Mad Dog for 18 years.... gonna miss it.

Well, AFIK, the MD-88s will be around longer then the older Mad Dogs, like the MD-83. That definitely goes for the MD-90, and the Boeing 717, which was originally the MD-95.

Mike .... TY for the compli.
Mike, RRiver, and David H. .... Thanx to each of you for your comments. Mike, I know there are environmental concerns, but I actually miss seeing all that smoke. If I do not include the B-52s and KC-135s I watched belching black smoke during MITO launches, the smokiest jet I ever saw was the Convair 990. When a CV 990 was approaching, they always looked like they were on fire because of the black smoke trailing from them. When taking off, if it was departing away and I was behind it, it was really hard to see the plane thru all that black smoke. Pollution? You bet, but it sure looked awesome. But these black smoke trails behind this MD-88 are one of the reasons it won't be around much longer. It's a gas guzzler compared to today's new commercial paxjets, it's loud, and it pollutes. So its days are numbered. RRiver ... I envy you, sir. I've been a pax on several MDogs and every trip except one was super. (That one time I was in the last row of seats. Saw nothing out the window the entire flight but the engine housing a few feet away. lol) David ..... I just recently learned from Dave S that the last AAL Dogs will be wfu next month. Do you have any type of guess or estimate as to how long Delta will keep their MDog fleetbirds?
