1962 Navion G according to the FAA.

What's the difference between a Navion Rangemaster (see tip tank lettering), type designator RANG, and a North American Navion, type designator NAVI? FAA database names "Navion" as the manufacturer and the model; ICAO type designator database doesn't offer that as an option.

The original 'bubble canopy' Navion was designed and built in 1945 by North American Aviation in Los Angeles. N.A. sold the design to Ryan Aircraft in San Diego, who built over 1,000 Navions before they sold the design. Rights to the Navion have subsequently been re-sold a number of times.

An unverified story popular at the time was that N.A. built the airplane with 'surplus' government-owned material purchased for P-51's, and that the sale to Ryan had been 'forced'.

Nice picture!

I think the "Rangemaster" was only built by the Navion company. Neither North American, Ryan, nor Rockwell, ever offered the variation. Thus, I would assume the FAA gave it a type designation since all "Rangemasters" were "Navion" built (between 1960 & 1972)...

Looks to me like a Navion G. FAA registration states it was mfg in 1962. Lookin' sharp for a 60 year old aircraft.

Your bird is a beauty!

Had a few in the family. Now they are almost a collectors bird being the owners invest so much money in them to the tune of over $100,000 that's after the buying cost. A beautiful handling airplane very forgiving
