It might be a C-117. Both the USN and USMC flew those and I think the USN used them in Antarctica. The planes made for the civilian market were just called Super DC-3s. The pictured plane has the rounded tail which should identify it as an standard R4D. Most,or all, of the C-117s had a larger, squared off tail. Lots of C-117 pics through google.
