Prof. Kurt Tank's masterpiece of fighter aircraft design... circa WWII.
My father's B-17 was limping home over Germany after a raid early in the war. They were hit by anti-aircraft and on three engines. There was always a fighter assigned to dispatching the stragglers that couldn't hold formation. The FW flew parallel and dipped his wings up and down - that was the signal. "Hit da silk". He waited until he counted 10 chutes, then he shot down the B-17. The first thing the German's did was to take them to the nearest doctor for check-ups and surgery to remove shrapnel. Everyone lived.
What a story Alan - thanks for sharing that!
alan, if I had been that German pilot, I would have been very afraid of being raked by machine-gun fire when attempting that maneuver.
Good story, Alan
TOO FW-ING COOL!
Dennis Stockton - note that Alan says "the FW flew parallel" - not an attacking manoeuvre (and may have been out of range).
There's a reason the Fw-190 is called the butcher bird!
Regardless, a beautiful aero design.
