SOFIA! Nice shot. I got to see this being built/modified in Waco at the L3 facility there.
10 years ago lived in Lancaster @ 30th East & Ave K - on north downwind leg from AF Plant 42 and saw this many times doing touch n gos I expect. Apparently it's been cancelled.

On the other hand the Webb telescope will do much better in mid-IR than SOFIA (or anything else air or ground-based) ever could. It's still a wonderful variation on the theme of 747 though.

Sad to see it is being retired, but not at all surprised. JWST capabilities far exceed that of SOFIA. And, ongoing costs of operation was stretching the limit of funding.
